COMMUNITY VISION / CITY PLANNING
CONCERNS
- There isn't enough active community involvement in the planning of our city's design.
- Traffic is already a well-known problem on that section of Johnston Street and an entrance so close to the stoplight at Bertrand would increase the number of accidents in the area.
- There are already many vacant commercial spaces and buildings in Lafayette (several are just across the street from the Horse Farm on Johnston in Winwood Shopping Center!)
- What kind of business does "high-end general business" mean and would they be locally-owned? The Girard Park neighborhood members already fought and won against Mr. Davidson's attempt to have his property rezoned a few years ago. Some felt that the University's exemption from zoning laws could be detrimental for the neighborhood if the land swap is successful.
ACTION PLAN
- To form a concrete vision for the future of Lafayette and encourage developments that would act as cultural infrastructure to bring the community together.
- To investigate potential grants available to purchase the Horse Farm for the community.
- To contact New Orleans organizations for input on civic, environmental and cultural development and possibly funds.
- To determine greenspace benefits to a city and to present these to the city council.
- To research the possibility of Historical Landmark status for the Horse Farm property and if that would create some legal protection for the site.
